Trash Talk
Jewel McHale, Solid Waste and Recycling Committee
Two new additions can be found at the Transfer Station. You will see them near the Hopper. They are large yellow and blue containers with a "Planet Aid" logo on them. The Gray Transfer station under the direction of Randy Cookson has joined partners with Planet Aid. Planet Aid is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the environment and creating sustainable development in Africa and Asia. Items donated to Planet Aid are resold and proceeds are used to support education, community development and HIV/AIDS programs in Africa and Asia. Planet Aid was founded in 1997 in Boston, MA. In the past ten years they have donated $13 million to development projects and 280 million pounds of clothing from their 8000 collection bins located in 20 states. Many of us have good clothing which we never use. It may be stored in our closets or attics and our intention is that one day we will wear it again. But usually, if we are truthful, when we clean out the closet or attic, these items get thrown into the trash and deposited into our local Hopper at the Transfer station. This costs us money because we pay by the pound for everything we place into the Hopper. Planet Aid is an addition to the recycling effort here in Gray. By donating your used clothing and shoes instead of placing them in the Hopper you help someone in need and you also help Gray increase the percentage of recycling we do annually as well as reduce costs by not putting these items in the Hopper. Tis' the season for cleaning out closets and attics. Whatever the reason, please use the Planet Aid boxes for all used clothing and shoes! |
