Libby Hill Trails Get New Bridge

This fall, Libby Hill can boast a number of improvements, including a new bridge, expanded parking and improved signage on the trails. Steve McPike spent countless hours this fall clearing some new trails and improving signage on all the existing ones. Steve has also done amazing work on the Web site, www.libbyhill.org. Visit the Web site for regular trail updates and to download an updated trail map, trail descriptions and a complete trail guide. New this fall, there are even snowmobile trail descriptions on the site!

On November 10, Wayne Wood threaded his blue tractor, hauling a flatbed piled with pre-cut planks and timbers, down steep slopes and through the trees to a broad wet area that is difficult to cross when water levels are high. Carl Holmquist, Mark Norton, Mark Landry, Wayne Holmquist, Anne Gass, Tyler Holmquist and Ryan Sullivan helped assemble a rugged bridge that spans the crossing and will last for many seasons to come. The bridge work was supported by a grant from the Davis Conservation Foundation, for which we are very grateful. The same day, Steve McPike, Joel McPike and John Keller did some more clearing on the new Outback Trail. It's looking great and will soon be ready to go.

In early November, the town of Gray's Public Works Department created a roomier and more defined parking lot at the base of Libby Hill, beside the middle school. The trail kiosk has been moved to the parking area as well. Many thanks to the town for this excellent work. The expanded parking makes it clearer where Libby Hill hikers should park. Please remember though, that trails should be accessed behind the middle school, not up Libby Hill Road. Follow the driveway behind the school and proceed to the trail heads that are on the other side of the chain link fence.

The trails are now open for snowshoeing and skiing, so check them out. Also, we are planning a winter fun event in early March and need volunteers to help plan and coordinate the activities. If you can donate some time between now and March, call Steve McPike at 657-2114 or e-mail him at libbyhilltrails@gmail.com.
