Josh Locke Update

Kelsey Brimmer

You may remember hearing about Gray, Maine resident Josh Locke and the unfortunate accident he endured a few years back in June of 2005. Locke was working on an elevator project at a nursing home in Fryeburg for Pine State Elevator. He was on the job alone that day when the elevator he was working on came crashing down on top of him.

Locke miraculously survived this rare and devastating accident and the now 28-year-old recently updated the Gray-New Gloucester Independent on where he is today and what he's been up to since that fateful event that changed his life forever.

As many people may know, the elevator crash left Locke paralyzed from the waist down, but as he told the Independent, the accident hasn't stopped him one bit from living his life to the fullest.

"Since then, I'm definitely fully mobile again. I've been doing everything myself, and not too long ago, I built a house in Gray," Locke says. "I now help out friends and work at my dad's autobody shop. I also work out regularly and go to the gym."

After Locke's three-and-a-half month stay in the hospital, the town of Gray held a benefit event for Locke at the Gray Legion.

"Everyone was so willing to help me with everything," Locke says. "They were great." While Locke no longer works for Pine State Elevator, he has kept in touch with everyone. "All of my friends there are still some of my great friends," Locke says. "Not much has really changed there, but the company has become a little more safety-oriented. For instance, people used to go on the job alone all the time when I still worked there; they don't allow that anymore at all."

Locke can truly say the kind of accident that happened to him is the type of thing that changes one's life forever.

"It definitely has changed some of my perspectives on how to look at life," Locke says. "The things that are least expected - they really do happen sometimes."
