Celebrating Hanukkah
Jackie Rybeck
Because it is a fun, child-centered occasion, Hanukkah is the most widely celebrated American Jewish Holiday. Hanukkah stands for "rededication," and commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem, which was desecrated by foreign forces. It also reaffirms the struggle it takes to continue to lead Jewish lives and live by the commandments of God. Hanukkah begins each year on the 25th of the Hebrew month of Kislev which (this year) falls on the evening of December 4 and continues for eght days. Unlike most of the other Jewish holidays, which require intense spiritual reflections, the celebration of this holiday is filled with the exchange of gifts, excellent food and the lighting of the Menorah with one more candle each night. Yet, the most important message is found in the name dedication. Jews dedicate themselves through their faith to pursue the high ideals of both religion and humanity. This important challenge is passed from generation to generation. By studying other beliefs, we see similarities to our own, learn to respect other religions and strengthen our own faith. |
