At the Wildlife Park
Miriam Bisbee
Working around the animals you can't help getting fond of them, but every once in awhile we get a sharp reminder that we're not dealing with domestic pets here. The sudden disappearance of our red fox served as one reminder. Did a little taste of freedom in the new pen tempt him to seek an even larger sphere? If so, will he know how to make a living in the wild, having been man-dependent all his life? Is it possible an airborne predator - an eagle, maybe - could have snatched him from us? Probably we'll never know. Even more shocking was what happened in the deer yard. One of the bucks appeared one morning with antlers and face smeared with blood. Futher investigation revealed the victim, a rival buck, gored to death. And we thought murderous jealousy was a human trait! If you deal with wild aminals, never forget that they are wild. |
