Between her demanding after-school commitments to ballet and singing, 17-year-old Lindsey Morton has a lot on her plate - but it's nothing she can't handle. The Gray New-Gloucester High School senior's stellar report cards are nothing to scoff at either, leading many people to the question: is she just one of those wonder students every school seems to have?

Lindsey says she's just a student with a lot of passions for different things. She's been taking ballet lessons at the Prudence School of Ballet in Gray for 12 years, and has been singing for five years for the Wescustago Youth Chorale. She's also the Public Relations Officer for the high school National Honor Society this year, and enjoys volunteering for Care Highway, a non-profit group that the high school provides an online auction for.

Every day after school and on weekends, Lindsey spends at least a few hours either practicing ballet or singing, with some homework or babysitting jobs thrown into the mix here and there. She hardly has any free time, but Lindsey believes it's important to stay involved throughout one's high school years and she wouldn't have it any other way.

"I think it's important to stay involved because it broadens your horizons. You can't get these experiences in a classroom all the time," she says. "It can be stressful at times for sure, but I really love all of it."

During Lindsey's sophomore year of high school, she took a trip that she calls, "a huge eye-opening experience." Along with a youth group from her church, Lindsey went on a mission trip to Honduras.

"All the kids there were my age, and we built and painted bunk beds for kids and brought medications for the local clinic there," she says. "I learned so much about what it's like down there and how easy I have it here."

Lindsey was so moved by her experiences in Honduras, that once she is at college next year, she hopes to take similar trips through school programs to help out countries in need.

"After seeing the kids there and how they live, I just really want to help," she says.

Adding to Lindsey's already chock-full schedule as of late is the tedious and nerve-wracking process of applying to colleges. She says she is planning on applying to colleges in the New England: Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., and the University of New England, Colby College and Bowdoin College, all in Maine. Her top college choices at the moment are Bowdoin College and Gordon College.

Lindsey will also be singing with Wescustago at Maine State Ballet's version of the Nutcracker starting next weekend.

It's safe to say that if you need to spend some time with Lindsey in the near future, you'd best be making plans with her months in advance because she seems to be one busy girl.
