The foliage views promise to be spectacular this weekend, and just at the perfect time to explore what the Libby Hill Forest Trails have to offer. Libby Hill Forest consists of well over six miles of recreational paths for non-motorized use. The land is located on top of a ridge next to the Middle School and begins just past the chain-link fence. There, you will find three trail head maps, marking the entrances to many mystical trails. If you have never visited the trails, the Libby Hill Committee will be celebrating their anniversary on Saturday with an Orientation Walk at 1:30 p.m. Rain date, (if necessary) on Sunday, same time. Even pets are welcome and encouraged to join in on the fun. All participants of this walk will become experts at navigating the trails while learning it's history. In 1970 the Dow Family donated 70 acres of land to the Town of Gray to be used for park and recreational activities. In January 2000, a committee of over two dozen interested members outlined how the property should be developed and the town council approved the project. In 2004, an additional 46 acres was donated by the family of Harold Libby and a new trail was created along with a memorial erected in his honor. Over 100 volunteers worked well over 2000 hours making their way to the top of the ridge, which peaks at an elevation of 469 feet. These trails offer a wonderful place to enjoy nature year round. People can jog, walk, ski and bike a number of loops ranging from half to twenty miles. The trails are well marked as hikers enter the woods, but a map of the area can be found at the Parks and Recreation Department. Extensive maps and descriptions of each trail can also be located on their website: Libbyhill.org.
