U10 Girls - The U10 girls had a great day at the Crossroads Challenge. They started out with a 4-0 loss to a strong Novas team from Waterville. The girls were down 3-0 at the half, then played them even until late in the game, with Sarah Giggey giving a strong performance in goal. The highlight of the game was Izzy DeTroy receiving a sportsmanship medal for displaying for her good play during a tough defeat. The second game of the day was a 1-1 draw with Lake Region, with Sarah Giggey scoring the only goal for the Patriots. The girls showed great sportsmanship again during this hard fought battle, with Megan Ruby receiving a second sportsmanship medal for the Patriot girls. The last game of the day saw the Patriot girls come away with a 2-0 win over Winslow. Kate Donovan and Sarah Giggey supplied the scoring with one each. The girls displayed great sportsmanship throughout all 3 games on the day and should be proud. U13 Girls - The U13 girls opened the Crossroads Challenge with a 4-0 win over Hudson (NH) and then faced Division 1 South Portland under the lights in a rematch of last year's Anthem Cup semi-final game. The Patriot team was fired up for the game, and after a hard-fought battle, suffered a 2-0 loss. They wrapped up the tournament with a 4-0 loss to Winslow. U9 Boys - The U9 boys had two losses and one win in the tournament. In recognition of their first win of the season, and with his honor on the line, coach James Carter then shaved his head and let the boys paint it red! No kidding. U10 Boys - The U10 boys played hard and finished the tournament 0-2-1. U11 Boys - The Patriot U11 boys played great games during the tournament even though the results were not in their favor. In the first game, South Portland won 3-1. Thomas Woods scored the lone goal with an assist by Tyler St.Pierre. In game 2, Eric Wilcox and Tyler St. Pierre both scored as Hampden edged the Patriots 3-2. In game 3, the Patriots defeated Lake Region 2-0. The defense was strong, led by George Labozzo, Jessie Lowell and Jessie Ricardi. Jake LaCerda played outstanding goal keeping, not allowing any goals. Austin Esquivel put the boys up with a goal in the first half. Jessie Lowell then rocketed a shot from midfield to give the Patriots a 2-0 advantage. U12 Boys - The Patriots U12 boys team faced tough opposition. Starting off on Saturday morning against the Waterville powerhouse Novas-Hale, the Patriots lost 15-1, their only goal scored by Will Shafer. Their second game that day was against Freeport, a rival from a previous weekend. This game was closer, but the Patriots went down 5-0. On Sunday, they faced another strong team from Windham and lost 7-0. There were bright spots throughout the weekend, such as some great goal-tending by Justin Curtis and Eli Donovan, strong, penetrating runs upfield by Will Shafer, Elijah Roe, and Noah Lobozzo, and good defensive work from Cody Brann, Paul Phillips, and Ryan Tupper. The second half against Windham saw more Patriot shots on net than in any other game this season. U13 Boys - The U13 boys stepped up to the Challenge by winning all of their games for the weekend and coming away with the tournament championship for the second year in a row. The boys started out strong with a win over Westbrook on Saturday morning. With scores and assists by seven different players on the team, they were able to work together to a 5-1 victory. The goals were as follows: Nick Nelsonwood assisted by Connor Mailman, Christian Verreault assisted by Joshua Kane, Will Bartlett, Joshua Kane assisted by Christian Verreault, and Craig Moreau. Later that afternoon, the Patriots met up with South Portland in a back and forth nail biter, coming out on top 4-3. Goalkeeping by Nick Rogers and scores by Paul Fotter, 2 by Joshua Kane, and the last goal to put them on top to stay by Christian Verreault. With the two wins under their belt, they advanced to the championship game against a strong Freeport team under the lights on the Varsity Soccer field Sunday night. The game was a close one and going into halftime, the Patriots were down 1-0. They were a determined group though and came out in the second half of the game with a very strong defensive stand by Ben Jordan, Jack Martell, Travis Hicks, and Jacob Street. They were able to contain the speed of Freeport and keep the ball away from goalkeeper Nick Rogers. The offense then took over and after many shots on net were able to tie the score on a kick by Jack Martell to Craig Moreau who set the ball into the goal. The battle continued as Freeport continued to get breakaways with their speed only to be stopped and the ball turned around. Late in the second half, another opportunity presented itself to Garret Wilbur after a strong pass from Christian Verreault, and the Patriots went to 2 and 1. All the players on the team stepped up in the game and played a tough and exciting game to come out with the victory. The team ended the evening with loud cheers for both teams and a trophy ceremony with pictures to follow. It was a great ending to a great weekend of soccer. U14 Boys - The U14 boys won their bracket of the Crossroads Challenge with a 1-0 victory over Western Maine United. After opening the tournament with a 2-0 win over Hampden, the Patriots had 1-1 ties with Oxford and WMU to qualify for the championship game. The final was a well played game on both sides of the ball, with no score at the half. Ryan Ward scored the winning goal with less than ten minutes left in the second half off a penalty kick. Connor Morrison had several spectacular saves in goal to preserve the victory. Ward led the scoring for the Patriots in the tournament, with three goals overall, followed by Nate Palmer with two goals. Throughout the tournament, the U14's controlled the ball in their opponent's half of the field, in large part due to the strong midfield play of Donovan Hodges, Michaela Despins, Tim Dubois, Nick Henneman, Tim Devlin and Greg Morrison. The Patriots defense gave up the fewest goals of any of the U14 teams in the tournament, primarily due to outstanding marking defense, and was led by the efforts of Tim Myers, Nick Jordan, Nic Arris, Ian Martell, Kane Molleo and Patrick Rice. |
