On Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21, the Town of New Gloucester will be hosting the last unofficial fair of the year. According to the Committee Chair, Scott Doyle, it started out being the Fire and Rescue's Open House but outgrew its location at the fire station. The event moved to the fairgrounds on Bald Hill Road in order to continue to grow, educating citizens on public safety and making aware the needs and efforts of local nonprofits. This event is fully supported by local businesses. It takes over $13,000 and the hard work of eight volunteers to make next weekend a reality.

This year's event is now the seventh annual Community Fair, and the air will be filled with live music, public safety demonstrations, a Lion's Club Car Show, craft booths, children's games and activities and "the smell of tons of food" reports Scott.

Saturday's theme will be Public Safety Day with numerous Fire and Rescue demonstrations including one with the Life Flight helicopter. A Black Hawk helicopter will also appear from the skies, and a blood drive will be held by the American Red Cross. Visitors can take a nice break from all the going's on for the famous Fire and Rescue Chicken BBQ. Activities will keep everyone busy with wagon rides, a 1861 baseball game and even Cow Patty Bingo. And it is just as it sounds! A grid is made in the field, (numbers across, letters down) participants pick a square and, yes, you guessed it, a cow is placed in the area to "mark" her spot. This game may take a few minutes or a few hours. On stage for the day will be Kat's Kids Sing, The Intergalactic Yurt Band and the Mountain Cats. A hot-air balloon will decorate the sky with rides and at dusk, the horizon will be illuminated with fireworks. The Fair winds down for the day with a Field Party, including an immense bonfire complete with story telling.

For the first time ever, the Fair will continue into Sunday. Scott joked at how Sunday was going to be for rest and clean up, "but who needs rest?" he said.

The day will be packed with fun as its theme is Big Boy's Toys Day. Construction equipment will take the field as well as numerous big toys and much more. Best baked entries will be viewed and judged. On stage will be the GNGHS Band, The 50/50 Band and Jim Gallant.

New Gloucester will certainly be the place to be on October 20 and 21. The major fairs have come and gone, but according to Scott Doyle, the best fair is yet to be.
