Many of you know Gary Crocker, a Maine humorist, who has been the legislative liaison for the community college system. After 23 years, Gary retired in June. He was invaluable to the recent transition and expansion of the technical colleges to the community college system which is integrated with University of Maine; a tremendous asset to our youth in terms of cost and availability as they seek their degree! Gary was a happy, informed, trusted individual within the Halls and a highly respected lobbyist. During his tenure, he was actually invited to the Chambers to share his humor from the Speaker's Podium, bringing a smile to the House member's hearts in the wee hours as the legislature was winding down toward "sine die" (closure of the session)! Recently Sen. Susan Collins spoke at the dedication of the John G. Moore Auditorium at the Schoodic Education and Research Center in Acadia National Park, Winter Harbor. The auditorium is located on the former naval base, which was transferred from the U.S. Navy to the National Park in 2002. Sen. Collins was instrumental in securing Department of Defense funds for the conversion to improve information technology and establish Acadia Partners for research and education in the park. Last week our Business Committee traveled to Houlton to hold a forum with area businesses. Our objective: to see how the State can improve its business climate by removing unnecessary, outdated or burdensome laws and regulations that are hindering small businesses. We met with Houlton's council, the economic development corporation and Pioneer Wireless Network, and toured Smith and Wesson, Houlton's largest employer. When we listen, we learn! Our committee plans to visit Lewiston-Auburn in November. |
