At the New Gloucester Selectmen's meeting on Monday evening, representatives from the Maine Turnpike Authority presented the board with a plan to widen the bridge on the Mayall Road. Bob Driscoll explained that as of right now, the project will take about a year. The process will begin in November with bidding and construction will start in early winter. Embankment and ground work will be done in the spring and summer/early fall will see paving and completion. The construction will finish with quite a new look to it. The bridge will widen from its 14 feet to 32 feet and clearance from the turnpike will heighten from 14 to 16.5 feet. It will also have a new shape. The bridge, as it stands now, is a fairly straight shot over the turnpike. As proposed, the new bridge will have a slight S-shape, allowing the clearance of the bridge to be higher. Its new shape, most of which will not overlap the existing bridge, will also limit closure time, avoiding detours for 9-10 months for drivers. In other business, the board voted to replace Wayne Cobb's seat on the November 6 ballot. Nomination papers are now available at the town office and must be returned by October 4. |
