The MDIFW Open House at the Park this Saturday is not quite the "Last Hurrah" of the year, but it promises to be one of the biggest. Come and meet fisheries and wildlife biologists, game wardens and safety and hatchery staff and study the educational displays and exhibits. And it's all free, although donations are gratefully accepted. Many of the displays offer free literature to broaden your knowledge of Maine wildlife and show how to enjoy the fields, lakes and forests with pleasure and safety. The Friends of the Maine Wildlife Park latest project, the new red and gray Fox Exhibit, will be formally dedicated at 11 a.m. Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Danny Martin will be on hand to dedicate this attractive new exhibit. Also, the park's resident bald eagle will make several appearances throughout the day and the bull, cow and calf moose are an outstanding family group to view and photograph. Admission is free for all those attending on September 8, although any donation to benefit the Maine Wildlife Park would be greatly welcomed. Fall is a great time to visit the park; the weather is cooler, the many demonstration wildlife and flower gardens are in spectacular form; and the wildlife is displaying full sets of antlers and attractive fall fur coats. Next day, in honor of Grandparents' Day, all grandparents get in free. Kids, you can afford to bring your grandma and grandpa on September 9. You'll only have to pay for yourselves! On Columbus Day weekend, October 6 to 8, the Nature Store will have a Super Sale with lots of great stuff including MDIFW logo T shirts, vests and hats. Friday, October 26, brings the most popular Night Hike of the year, the Halloween celebration with Halloween displays, costumes, door prizes, the works. Finally, the very last hurrah is Veterans Day. All veterans and members of the Armed Forces get in free that day, with our grateful thanks for their service. That's it for this year, but the animals will still be here and we'll see you next year. |
