Jack A. McPhail, of Gray, died when he tried to avoid skidding cars on an icy highway and his double tractor-trailer went out of control and slid down a hill into woods. The accident happened last Friday on rain-slicked Route 495 near Boxboro, Massachusetts. According to a report in The Boston Globe, McPhail was swerving to maneuver around a car with four occupants and another vehicle. The travelers in those cars were taken to local hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening. Route 495, a major highway around Boston, was closed for three hours after the accident, which happened at 6:40 a.m.
