The Gray Town Council presented a proposal to amend the definition of the town wellhead districts to control growth and protect drinking water, in a meeting Tuesday night at Stimson Hall. After initially suggesting a change to allow two-acre building lots, the council decided to stay with language with that requires a minimum of four acres. This would limit population density in the area north of downtown. The wellhead districts center around the Route 26 crossover of the Maine Turnpike, where Gray has its main drinking water well. The proposed amendments will be forwarded to the Gray Planning Board for a public hearing and an eventual report back to the Council. The Council also moved forward with a proposed amendment to the town's Comprehensive Plan that would add a business district called Area 8 off Route 26 near the town's Public Safety building. The amendment would allow the Planning Board to start work on changes in zoning rules that could allow Hannaford Bros. to build a grocery store there. While former Town Councilor Pam Wilkinson found fault with a major business in a residential area, the present Councilors have presented this as a benefit to Gray's tax base. Hannaford Bros. could pay as much as $50,000 annually in taxes to the town. | [an error occurred while processing this directive]
