Light Bulbs Not just any light bulb. |
GNG - Weather permitting, the GNG Lions will be outside the Gray Transfer station on Saturday, March 3 selling compact fluorescent light bulbs, known as CFLs. There has been a lot of ink lately about global warming resulting from energy consumption throughout the world. Many articles cite the conversion from old style incandescent bulbs to CFLs as a very effective way for individuals to have an immediate impact on energy consumption. According to an article in the Portland Press Herald (2/21/07), the Australian government is implementing a countrywide phase-out of incandescent bulbs in favor of CFLs. They expect the phase-out to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 4 million tons by 2012 and to cut household power bills by up to 66 %. Closer to home, the GNG Lions have sold 470 bulbs in various sizes to date. These bulbs use a total of 6, 936 watts. The bulbs they replaced would have used 31,000 watts. The same amount of light at a savings of over 24 Kilowatts of electricity. not quite enough to mothball a power plant, but we're off to a very good start.
Watch for the Lions sign at the transfer station this Saturday. We have 60, 75 and 100 watt equivalent bulbs available at competitive prices and all proceeds go to benefit Lions scholarships and other Lions programs.
If you can't make it this Saturday, don't worry. The Lions, in partnership with Efficiency Maine, have plenty of bulbs available and plan to set up at various times and locations throughout the Spring and Summer months. Quantity sales can also be arranged. Joe Murray is the Lions contact person. Phone 657-3034 or e-mail: jmurray1@maine.rr.com
