John Hawley took the helm at the Mechanic Falls Town Office in July, yet he is no stranger to the townspeople. He is a lifelong citizen of the town and enjoyed his earlier years doing the usual activities at Elm Street School such as band, baseball; his favorite being soccer. He even held the honor of class president in the ninth grade. John, as most others in Mechanic Falls, finished his schooling at Edward Little. He studied at the Central Maine Community College and the University of Southern Maine. He is presently studying Business Administration and Management and will receive his degree this spring. Surprisingly enough, John has been an employee of Mechanic Falls for over sixteen years. He began his civic duties as an EMT and "call" firemen in 1990 and is currently a Deputy Fire Chief. It has been a benefit and money saver for the town to have John to maintain this title. It enables the town to have a fire department officer available during daytime hours to deal with administrative issues and respond to calls as an incident commander. He can also aide the fire chief in day-to-day duties. He moved to the Code Enforcement Office in 1998 and is a certified fire inspector. For the last three years, he served as assistant town manager, so when Dana Lee left the position of Town Manager, John was the prime candidate for the job. He holds a seat on the board of the Fire Explorers and Municipal Safety Committee and serves as Treasurer for both the Mechanic Falls Fireman's Association and Mechanic Falls Rescue Association. "It is really a thrill for me to be the manager for the town in which I grew up. Living here for the past thirty years, I have seen the town through it's mill closing and "depressive" era right through that to the quaint little bedroom community that we are today. Being a hometown boy I find I have quite a bit of support from those who have known me all these years, but also adds pressure to me to ensure that our town is well looked after. I have a ton of pride in this community and have only its best interests at heart." John met his wife, Michelle at the movies in May of 1993. The couple was engaged in July and married in December! They reside in Mechanic Falls with their two daughters, Alycia, a sophomore at Poland Regional and Caitlin, a fourth grader at Elm Street. The family enjoys spending time together traveling with their camper on the weekends, where John "relishes" his hobby of cooking. | [an error occurred while processing this directive]
