Feb 02, 2007 "Building a Better Community Through Communication" Vol 36, Number 5

Jackie Rybeck

The deadline for Property Tax Exemptions is April 1. The State of Maine and your local town provides qualified residents to receive exemptions on property tax. The value of the exemption is subtracted from your total real estate property valuation. Qualifications and values vary from year to year. Please check the form, if you did not qualify last year, you may this year.

Forms may be obtained at your town office, they include the Homestead Exemption, the Veterans Exemption and the Blind Exemption:

  • For the Homestead Exemption, the owner needs to be a resident of the town for the past twelve months.

  • For the Veteran's Exemption, the owner must be 62 years of age by April 1, a veteran who can provide DD214.

  • For Blind Exemption, the owner is legally blind and has doctor-documented statement.
