With the noted drastic decline bird populations across the United States, it is important to make the public aware of birds and hopefully generate an interest in conservation of biodiversity in their communities. There are many ways to help birds, including planting native trees, shrubs and flowers, along with providing water and putting up feeders and roosting boxes to help them during the harsh winter months. To assist the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon better survey the number of species that exist in various parts of the country, there will be a 2007 Great Backyard Bird Count, which takes place on Presidents' Day weekend. My daughter and I participated in this for the first time last year and had a great time. Sadly, we were the only Gray residents to submit daily checklists, but it made it exciting knowing that one of the red dots on the map, which represented Gray, was put there on our behalf. It would be nice to see others join in. There is a contest that recognizes the top 10 locations that submit the most checklists. The GBBC even has packets available for teachers for classroom use. It is easy and a lot of fun! Information can be obtained at www.birdsource.org/gbbc. Thank you. | [an error occurred while processing this directive]
