The first step in making possible a proposed Hannaford's Supermarket on Shaker Road will be taken on Tuesday night, when the Gray Town Council takes up an amendment to the Comprehensive Plan that would add a new section called "Area 8 Highway Commercial (Growth Area"). The language supporting the amendment says, "the expansion of commercial land has been a topic of discussion in Gray for many years. In response to this, the Town needs to broaden their tax base to encourage more commercial business". The Council calls Route 26 "a major arterial funneling a great deal of traffic in and around the Town." The action would establish a new highway commercial district; remove the Aquifer Overlay District and replace it with a prohibited-use section in the new Highway Commercial District. The language defines the area in rather broad terms: "Route 26, the Maine Turnpike, the Wellhead Protection Zone and a residential neighborhood". | [an error occurred while processing this directive]
