Dispatch petition drive succeeds
Ray Clark
The petition drive to put the question of siting Gray Dispatch met its goal and then some. 1,053 signatures were submitted; 947 were certified as valid. 866 were needed to put the question on next June's municipal ballot. Gray handled its own public-safety dispatch operation in 1977; it went full-time the next year. In the early days, calls went to dispatchers' homes. In 2006, the Gray Town Council underwent a study of dispatch options in an effort to save money. Three possibilities eventually arose: transferring the function to Cumberland County Dispatch or to the State Police, or joining forces with Raymond. The Council decided to go with Cumberland County starting January 1, 2007, but moved quickly when a Dispatch employee resigned. Although Dispatch personnel insist there were replacements available, the Council decided to make the move early. Robert P. Carroll, father and grandfather of Fire-Rescue personnel, took out the petition and within two weeks had enough signatures to force a referendum. The Council will hold a public hearing on the matter at its next meeting, Tuesday, December 5. | [an error occurred while processing this directive]
