Gray goes for Austin, Tabor, Woodcock, Charter amendment

Ray Clark

Gray voters turned out 3,223 strong in Tuesday's election, and this conservative Town stayed true to its roots, voting narrowly to approve the so-called Taxpayers' Bill of Rights, 1,594-1,575, and supporting Republican candidate Chandler Woodcock over incumbent Governor John Baldacci, 1,041-985. Independent Barbara Merrill gathered 901 votes, Green candidate Pat LaMarche captured 266 and Philip Morris NaPier got just 10.

A Gray Town Charter amendment to put the Town's budget to referendum passed overwhelmingly, 2,159-996.

State Representative Susan Austin beat back a challenge from Democrat Anne Graham, winning in Gray 1,482-896. The margin narrowed when results from North Yarmouth and Pownal came in, but Austin was a clear winner, 2,198 to 1,979. And in District 110, Mark Bryant was returned to the State House, 2,033-1,195, over Clayton Haskell.

State Senator Karl Turner defeated John Simpson in Gray and in the District as a whole. Turner got 10,867 votes to Simpson's 8,224.

The Taxpayers' Bill of Rights and Woodcock were beaten statewide by fairly wide margins.
