Three local 4Hers shine at Cumberland Fair
Staff
Holli Googins, of Gray, showed the champion market hog; Emily Bartlett, of New Gloucester, showed the reserve champion baby beef steer; and Brittany Humphrey, also of New Gloucester, showed the reserve champion market lamb. Holli's Duroc market hog weighed in at 300 pounds. The highest bidder in the auction for the animal was AA Excavating. Holli has been raising market hogs for six years. This year, she took on the added responsibility of raising the Cumberland County 4H Leaders Association's raffle pig, in addition to her own hog. Emily is involved in raising 4H beef, baby beef steers and market hogs. Her Belted Galloway steer was purchased by Storey Brothers, and her 268-pound Duroc market hog, which placed 9th in its class, was purchased by Kimball's & Dube's Garage, of Gray. And Brittany's breeder-owned 128-pound Southdown lamb was purchased by Hannaford. Another of her market lambs was purchased by Patriot Mutual Insurance. Brittany has been raising sheep for 10 years, and has one grand champion and another reserve champion to her credit. She says she's already planning next year's entrant. Other local 4Hers did well, too. Tyler Bartlett's 1,064-pound Belted Galloway took fourth place, and was bought by another great 4H supporter, Cole Farms. Spring Meadows bought a 254-pound market hog raised by Concetta Gallant, Len Sherwood bought Dan Smith's market hog and Paul Lacy bought Chelsea Burnham's 140-pound market lamb. Everyone connected with 4H appreciates the support of the bidders and buyers, as well as the 4Hers themselves. | [an error occurred while processing this directive]
