First Congregational Church

Miriam Bisbee
Last Saturday the wind howled, the rain pelted down and the television screen showed a running list of cancellations crawling along the bottom. However, the supper at First Congregational Church was not among them. In spite of-or perhaps because of?-the wild weather, the Choir members and their helpers fed between forty and fifty people and netted around $400, not too shabby on a night that wasn't fit for man or beast. Perhaps the widespread power outages sent some to us for the hot supper they couldn't produce at home. We thank everyone who helped on the supper and everyone who tried but lost their power at a crucial stage in the production. Especially we thank our loyal guests who show up, come wind or high water. And thanks to our guardian angel who kept the power on at Church.

Our suppers will be on hiatus during November and December. Between Thanksgiving company and Christmas shopping, who has time to go out to supper? Besides, you'll get calories enough at Thanksgiving to keep you going till the ribbon candy hits the stores. We'll be back in January-unless we're buried under ten feet of snow. Can you imagine what the landscape would look like if the last three storms had come as flakes instead of drops?

Good news! We now have a Church School again! Jan and Michael Mills are leading the Junior Youth Group, which includes grades five through eight; Jane Hedstrom has a class of second-, third- and fourth-graders; and Holly Googins has taken on the little tots in preschool, kindergarten and first-grade. If any of our young families out there have given up on us and gone elsewhere, come back; we miss you!

In addition to the classes for the children, Pastor Hedstrom is conducting a Confirmation Group for sixth-, seventh and eighth-graders, and leading a study group on "Basic Christian Beliefs" on Tuesday evenings, 7 to 8:30 P.M., as well as a Thursday morning Bible study that convenes at 9:30 A.M. The other Bible study, led by a Church layman, is at 7 P.M. Tuesday. They are all presented at the Parish House.

Last Sunday we had the joy of welcoming five new members into the Church family. New Covenant members of First Congregational Church are Steve Duggan, Maureen Messer, Michael Tauber, Susan Tauber and David Wislowski. Delighted to have you aboard!
