New Gloucester Tree Lighting finalized New Gloucester Historical Society has announced the schedule and program for the annual tree lighting. The date is Sunday, November 26, at New Gloucester Town Hall beginning at 4:30PM. The central feature of the tree lighting is Tiny Timber, the nation's smallest municipal tree. Children of all ages are reminded that they may be the lucky person to light the tree-arrive at Town Hall prepared to fill out your name on an entry blank and if your name is drawn then the honor of lighting the tree will go to you! Prior to the lighting itself, Carol Clark will lead the Gray-New Gloucester High School Chorus in some holiday songs then joined by an audience sing-along. The Master of Ceremonies is New Gloucester's own Kevin Fowler.Kevin's two favorite holidays are Christmas and April Fool's Day, so you know he is always full of excitement. After the tree lighting, everyone is welcome to venture to the New Gloucester Library for refreshments. The tree lighting is held rain, shine or snow-the Town Hall porch gets a little crowded during inclement weather but Tiny Timber gets lonely if we forget him on his special day. New Gloucester Historical Society thanks the staff, trustees and friends of the New Gloucester Library, Carol Clark and the high school chorus, Ed True and Kevin Fowler for their contributions to this fun time!

Quilt program set for Wednesday How did runaway slaves find their way to freedom? Surprisingly, the answer was often hidden in quilts. Now you can see for yourself how abolitionists created signposts in quilts that helped desperate men and women find safe havens, in a program sponsored by the Gray Historical Society offered on Wednesday, November 8, at 7:00 P.M. in the Gray Congregational Church Parish House on Brown Street, behind McDonald's. Betty Winslow, a well-known authority on the quilts, will show examples of the secret messages sewn into 19th century quilts. If the weather is stormy, the program will be rescheduled. For information, call the Historical Society on Tuesday from 9 A.M. until 3 P.M.; at other times, call 657-3507.
