Oct 13, 2006 "Building a Better Community Through Communication" Vol 35, Number 39

The American Workers 4H Club enjoyed a great week at the Cumberland Fair; even though there was rain a couple of days, it didn't dampen the spirits of these 4Hers.

First off displaying their projects in the 4H Hall were Adam Bridges and Leandra Grant. Adam's project was a poster for the Sports and Fitness project, for which he received a blue ribbon. Leandra's first year of 4H included a rosette winner display on Community Service. In addition to taking the top award in this category, she received a blue ribbon.

On Sunday we had two participants in the 4H Horse Show. They were Hannah Wurgler and Mindy Morrison. Both girls are relatively new to the 4H horse project, but each displayed their horsemanship nicely, even when one of the horses had other ideas! Mindy received a red premium for showmanship, a blue premium and a 6th place finish in hunter hack class.

Also on Sunday, the 4H Beef Breeding classes were held. We had four participants in these classes. In the steer show, Tyler Bartlett received a 2nd place finish in conformation and fitting classes and a third-place finish in the Senior Showmanship class. Tyler and his Red Angus steer "Buddy" received all blue ribbons for these placings. Emily Bartlett showed her Red Angus heifer "Bright Bar" in the Summer Yearling class and received a 3rd place finish in the conformation class, a second-place finish in the Senior Fitting class and a 1st place finish, along with a rosette and glass, for Senior Showmanship. Emily went on to compete for overall showman and received a 1st place. Alena Grant and Kassie Wilson showed two Hereford heifers for the first time at the Cumberland Fair. Alena received a second-place showing in both the fitting and showmanship class and received two blue ribbons. In the Spring Yearling class, Kassie and her heifer "Teddi" received a 1st place and a blue ribbon. In the Junior Yearling class, Alena and her heifer "Twilight" received a 1st place and a blue ribbon. Each 4Her received premiums to go along with their ribbon placement.

On Monday, the 4H market hog show was held, followed by the 4H Swine show. Emily Bartlett and Tyler Bartlett both participated. Emily and Tyler received a 3rd place and a 5th place in Senior Showmanship, respectively. Both 4Hers received blue ribbons. Tyler received a 6th place for his Duroc market hog, weighing in at 260 pounds. Emily wasn't far behind in 9th place with her Duroc hog weighing 268 pounds. Both received blue ribbons. Emily auctioned her hog on Wednesday, and received $2.10 per pound, and Tyler received $2.50 per pound. There were a total of 20 4H market hogs.

Emily also participated in the 4H Swine Show with her crossbred hog and won 2nd place and a blue ribbon in Senior Showmanship. In the gilt 6 months and under one-year class, she won another 2nd place and another blue ribbon. Both 4Hers won premium money to go along with their ribbon placements.

Both Emily and Tyler went back in the show ring on Thursday for the Open Swine Show. Emily took a second in her gilt class, while Tyler won first in another gilt class. The first-place gave Tyler the opportunity to take his Duroc gilt back into the ring for Overall Champion Female class. All winners for the female gilt class compete. Tyler and his gilt took first place, a rosette and trophy. Emily showed her crossbred hog in the Heavyweight Barrow class and captured a fourth; 33 hogs showed in the class.

The Cumberland Fair is where these 4Hers have a chance to demonstrate a part of what they have done in their projects for the past year. It is culmination of a year's worth of work and fun. Not only do these young people raise their animals, they learn life skills along the way, such as record-keeping, time management, marketing and self responsibility.

Congratulations to all the 4H members!
