On September 29, Lt. Nat Berry was honored at a dinner recognizing his 34 years of contribution to the Maine State Warden Service. I had the distinct privilege to present the sentiment below to Nat from the 122nd Legislature on that special occasion.

Recognizing Lieutenant Nathaniel L. Berry IV, of New Gloucester, on his retirement from the Maine Warden Service on August 31, 2006. Nat began his career as a Maine Game Warden on November 20th, 1972. Since that time Nat has spent the last 34 years protecting the people and the wildlife resources of our state. In 1983 Nat was recognized by the department as Game Warden of the Year. Nat has always demonstrated a love of his work through the way he treated people and each individual situation and challenge as he served. Through his hard work and dedication Nat was made Game Warden Sergeant in 1985 and then promoted to Lieutenant in 1990. In Gray-New Gloucester and our surrounding towns Nat has been a constant presence of good family man, good neighbor, good role model for our youth and a fair and honest leader in his field.

It is with great appreciation for his career well spent and for the man that we congratulate, Nat, on his well deserved retirement.

SPONSOR: Representative Susan M. Austin, of Gray

COSPONSOR: Representative Michael Vaughan, of Durham

COSPONSOR: Senate Lois Snowe-Mello, of Androscoggin

COSPONSOR: Senator Karl Turner, of Cumberland

Nat was roasted and toasted with full Maine humor and honesty. Stories shared had rich scenes of field and stream! Nat received many commemoratives of his years with the department; perhaps the most poignant was his acceptance of a shadow box containing his Maine State Warden's Uniform presented by Captain Joel Wilkinson and Sergeant Chris Simmons. I BELIEVE that Commissioner Roland Martin of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife summed it up "perfectly" when he stated that Nat was a gentleman of gentlemen and a gentleman of officers!
