A Visit To The Gray News
(L-R) Jamie Moody, Kerrie Keller and Ray Clark
We recently went to visit Ray Clark, Editor at The Gray News. We are interested in setting up a school newspaper at the Dunn School, and wanted to find out how The Gray News is published. We want to share some of the things we learned with you.

The Gray News is the only newspaper in the State of Maine that is delivered to every home free. One of the questions we asked was, How do you pay for The Gray News if you deliver for free? Mr. Clark told us that he charges money for the ads to cover expenses.

Another thing we wondered about is if the deadline for the paper is Monday at noon, and the paper doesn't come out until Friday, what happens at The Gray News during the week. We found out there is plenty to do! On Monday and Tuesday, the articles are edited, typed and laid out on a special paper. On Wednesday, the paper is picked up by someone from the Brunswick Times Record, where The Gray News is taken to be printed. Have you ever noticed the paper is always 12, 16 or 20 pages? That is because the printing press prints in multiples of four! On Thursday, the 4,000 copies of the paper are checked, folded and bagged. The newspaper is also published on the internet so many people can read it.

Mr. Clark also spoke to us about the career of journalism. He said you have to be pushy, open-minded, persistent and have good, quick writing skills. We would like to thank Mr. Clark for taking the time to answer all our questions.

(Jamie and Kerrie are 5th-graders at Dunn Elementary School.)
