The gym at the Gray-New Gloucester Middle School was packed to capacity with fans supporting a 7th grade girls' basketball team that was on the verge of capping an undefeated season. There were knots in their stomachs, hands wringing and tension written all over their faces as they sat in the stands--for it was the fans who were nervous, not the players. Did they know that no G-NG girls' team had ever gone undefeated?

The team beat Gorham earlier in the week, 29-14, to bring their record to 13-0. Gorham played tough the first half, but the Little Lady Patriots dominated the second half. Forward Katie Skilling had 10 points and Kelly Bregman added 6 to cap the win and bring the girls to their final game against arch-rival Greely.

Greely had given the girls a good game earlier in the season and were out to avenge their previous loss. The first half didn't see a lot of scoring by either side. Defense on both sides was fearsome. G-NG was up 11-5 at the half. The fans were nervous, the girls were smiling. Greely pulled within three points at the end of the 3rd quarter. With three minutes remaining Greely hit a three-pointer to leave the Patriots with a mere one point lead, 19-18. Coach Littlefield called time out and brought her team to the sidelines. There were no long faces or even a hint of concern just attention to their coach and her instructions. Christine Whittier with an assist from Dawn Ross scored on the out-of-bounds play. Ross intercepted a Greely pass and hit Whittier again for a score. Emily Baker, Josalie Danielli, Kate Skilling and Kelly Bregman also scored from either the floor or the foul line to dash Greely's hope of an upset. The Little Lady Patriots would score 14 points in three minutes to win 33-18. Christine Whittier finished with 13 points and Emily Baker had 8 . The team had finished their season a perfect 14-0!

Congratulations to Coach Brenda Littlefield, whose knowledge, experience and pure love of the game led and directed these talented hoopsters through a great season.
