Tougher auto inspections coming

Staff

Kevin Kimball, of Kimball and Dube's Garage, warns that auto inspections will gradually become more stringent-and more expensive-starting January 1, 1999.

The first additional step, according to Kimball, is simply a gas-cap check for 1974 and later model cars. The cost of the total inspection will go up to $9.50 for these cars, and $6.50 for earlier models.

In 2000, the On-Board Diagnostics will be checked, and failures will have to be corrected by January 1, 2001. When that year rolls around, all OBD codes must be corrected before a sticker can be issued.

All this is part of the Cumberland County Enhanced Inspection. As its name implies, these new rules apply only to Cumberland County.
